CRPI Policy Action Capstone Courses

The Capstone course is designed for NUUM’s students to gain practical knowledge and achieve real world experiences in addressing the issues in the topics that integrate public policy, policy analysis, management, and science/technology in an interdisciplinary framework. Capstone projects in this course also encourage students to connect their projects to community issues and integrate outside-of-school learning experiences. The instructors from NUUM and the lead researchers from CRPI summer programs will lead their capstone projects along with the students this fall semester. Students are encouraged to work with a small group and demonstrate their knowledge based on their interests and majors.

Objectives

Students
i)can work with the Lead researchers or instructors from NUUM to address real-life problems,

ii) understand challenging problems and develop personal skills such as oral communication, public speaking, research skills, and teamwork planning,

iii) Students from NUUM will get 3 credits from this capstone course for their respective certificate programs (depending the time commitment requirements student could earn up to 6 credit hours with the approval of lead researcher(s) and the program director). ​

Deliverables

Each capstone research class is expected to produce an academic paper that includes its main findings and solution-oriented policy recommendations and present it to relevant stakeholders at the end of the project. Project deliverables include:

1. A 20-30 page academic paper with policy and action recommendations

2. An executive summary of the paper that outlines the main findings of the study and policy recommendations

3. PowerPoint slides for the final research/project presentation

4. Literature reviews, documentation relating to the methodology (such as survey forms), and raw data.

Eligibility

i) NUUM Students can directly enroll in the capstone course this fall semester.

ii) External Applicants must submit an application form announced by NUUM for this capstone course.

iii) Students must be at least in junior and senior years.

Fields of Study

Responsibility

  • Capstone project leaders and students in this program will spend 7-10 hours per week for the whole semester.
  • The project team organizes, writes, and presents a professional quality report, poster, and PowerPoint presentation to summarize and detail the project research, analysis, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Academic papers, Articles, etc., are expected to be the outcome of this capstone course.
  • Project Teams must frequently participate in the meeting hosted by Capstone Program Director of NUUM.
